LaShonda Johnson, a former U.S. Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. and proud Houston native, embodies the spirit of dedication and service. As a published author, speaker, and philanthropist, she has devoted her life to uplifting her family and the community around her.
LaShonda’s journey in the Marine Corps began in 2000, where she served as a Legal Services Specialist. Her determination and hard work led her to rise through the ranks to become a Staff Non-Commissioned Officer. Throughout her time in service, she was forward-deployed to various locations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, all while pursuing her education and earning two bachelor’s degrees in Criminal Justice and Health Care Management.
After returning to Houston, LaShonda took on the important role of leading a Marine Recruiting Substation, where she established a deep connection with the Harris County Veteran community. In 2013, she sought a career with the Texas State Troopers, but ultimately had to resign to care for her family. Although this decision was difficult, it turned out to be a blessing.
With her extensive network of Houston Veteran connections, LaShonda found new ways to serve her community. She worked tirelessly with organizations like the Mission Continues, Wounded Warrior Project, Lone Star Veteran Association, Travis Manion Foundation, and the Houston Veteran Affairs (VA) in various leadership positions. LaShonda is also deeply involved with the Armed Forces and Livestock Committee of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, further showcasing her commitment.
Even after leaving active duty, LaShonda’s dedication to her community remains unwavering. As a passionate advocate for Veterans, her heartfelt testimonies have played a crucial role in the Texas Congress, contributing to the establishment of Women’s Veterans Day on June 12th and the deployment of Women’s Veteran License Plates.
In a heartbreaking turn during Hurricane Harvey, LaShonda lost everything—her belongings, cars, old uniforms, and even her service animal. Yet, proving her resilience, she prioritized her children’s well-being and immediately returned to offer support to others in need. Her selflessness did not go unnoticed; the Houston Mayor honored her contributions by proclaiming February 8th as a day dedicated to LaShonda Johnson.
Most recently, in October 2023, LaShonda joined the Harris County Veteran Service Department as the Case Manager Supervisor, leading the outreach team with compassion and purpose. Her mission is to connect with veterans in the community who may not have the means to seek help on their own. LaShonda’s journey is a testament to the power of service, compassion, and community.
With a focus that has evolved and expanded but never wavered, our goal is to be the beacon for the unheard and unseen — individuals who've endured the deep and silent impact of traumas, particularly Sexual Trauma, Military Sexual Trauma, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). We channel our efforts into public speaking and awareness initiatives, casting a light on these issues in a way that's both empowering and enlightening. Through thoughtfully designed swag apparel, we transform support into a visible, unifying emblem that encourages survivors and their communities to stand tall in their truth. By fostering a culture of openness, we defy the stigma, ensuring that the impact of these experiences is acknowledged, and that the courage of survivors is celebrated.
Established with unwavering passion and commitment, Military Chic aspires to be more than a platform; we envision being a sanctuary where silence transforms into strength. Our roots, deeply embedded in the experiences of a female Marine Veteran, remind us daily of our greater mission: to embolden those weighed down by their untold stories of Sexual Trauma, Military Sexual Trauma, or PTSD. We see a future where these conversations echo throughout Cypress, TX, and far beyond, inspiring a societal wave of empathy, understanding, and proactive support. Our vision is a world free of the barriers that keep sufferers silent — a world where the journey from surviving to thriving is a shared and honored path.
